The name Nahuel Huapi has been derived from Mapuche language, where nahuel stands for “tiger” and “huapí­” stands for island. Originally the park was called Parque Nacional del Sur but in the year 1934, the park was renamed as Nahuel Huapi National Park in the year1934.

The land where the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, Argentina stands was donated by Dr. Francisco P. Moreno, Honoris Causa. His intention was to preserve the rich natural flora and fauna of Argentina and carry it on to the next days for the coming generation to know and experience the natural beauty in its truest form. On November 6th, 1903, approximately 10 sq. miles of land was donated to be maintained as park in the vicinity of the Nahuel Huapi Lake.

The Nahuel Huapi Lake is dotted with many islands among which “Victoria” is the largest being Victoria. The tallest peak in the park is the “Catedral” which rises to a height of 7880 ft. Cerro Tronador is the highest mountain in the park at an altitude of 3,491m. This national park is spread over an area of 2,927 sq mi in the Rí­o Negro and Neuquí©n provinces. The park extends over 76 kilometers in length and 12 kilometers in width. Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi in Argentina is known world wide and is a favorite destination among the nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. During spring season, the snow melts and falls down as some attractive waterfalls. In the winter season, the mountains present make good spot for skiers, among all the mountains, Cerro Catedral is the most famous.

The glacier present at Perito Moreno and lakes with icebergs makes beautiful scenery and tourists are mesmerized of the beauty and a memorable trip to this famous national park. In summer, the falls and the lakes make good spots to boat, fish, raft etc. A variety of flora and fauna are found in the rugged terrain of the mountains, hills and valleys.
