Cape Coast

Cape Coast is situated in Ghana. It is approximately 165 kms to the west of Accra. The coastline boasts of some wonderful examples of architecture of European style. It was discovered by the Portuguese during the 15th century. From 16th century onwards, it was colonized by the British, Swedish, Dutch, Portuguese and Danish. There are several tourist attractions in Cape Coast and this makes Cape Coast an ideal destination for a family outing.

Tourist Attractions in Cape Coast
There are several tourist attractions in Cape Coast, Ghana.
Kakum National Park: Kakum National Park is one of the major tourist attractions in Cape Coast. Set up in the year 1990, the Park covers an area of about 350 sq. kilometers. It is a rainforest with sheltered walkways and offers a panoramic view. You can get a glimpse of wildlife like birds, forest buffalos, monkeys, pigmy elephants and crocodiles. What else? You can also enjoy trekking, canoeing, safaris, fishing and sailing.

Cape Coast Castle: Cape Coast Castle is regarded as Ghana’s fortification. Set up in the year 1653, it was initially made of timber. Later on, it was rebuilt in stone. In the year 1664, the Castle was ruined by the British. However, this was reconstructed by the Committee of Merchants in the 18th century. It was set up as a depot for housing gold and timber. It was also used as a main center for trade of trans-Atlantic slave. During the 1920s, the Castle was first restored by the British Public Works Department. When Ghana became independent in the year 1957, the Castle came under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB). The Ghanian Government restored the building during the early 1990s.

By Air: Once every week, North American Airlines provides non-stop flights to Accra from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. North American Airlines also has flights to Accra from Baltimore via New York. Delta Airlines also has non-stop flights to Accra four times a week from John F. Kennedy Airport.

Best Time to Visit Cape Coast
The temperature usually remains hot and humid throughout the year. The period between October and March is usually sunny and it remains more or less dry. The rainy season starts from April and ends in July. The ideal time to visit Cape Coast is between June and August and between September and December as these are considered peak seasons for tourism.
