Constant conflicts between the King William I of Prussia and the liberal parliament led to eruptions over military reforms and Otto von Bismarck was appointed the new Prime Minister of Prussia. Bismarck is credited with successfully creating the North German Federation and excluding Austria from leading the German states. Germany took to establishing colonies outside Europe since 1884. First World War saw Germany in a totally defeated position as they had to sign the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

The humiliated Germany emerged as a major power to compete with the other western powers in the Second World War initiated by Hitler who followed an expansionist policy since 1938. The Second World War came to an end with the division of Germany and it was confined by the law from deploying its forces for expansionist policies.
