Geography of Germany

The Central European country of Germany is known to stretch from the Alps to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea across the North European Plain. Following European Russia Germany is reputed of having the second largest population in Europe and in terms of area its known to be the 7th largest. Thanks to its central location geography of Germany is known to share its borders with many other European countries. In the east the countries like Denmark in the north, Poland and the Czech Republic form its neighbors and the countries like Austria and Switzerland form its borders in the south. The southwestern portion is occupied by France and in the West Germany is bordered by Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands.

The northern third portion of the country lying in the North European Plain is known to have a flat terrain that’s touched by the watercourses, which are flowing to the north. These rivers are Elbe, Ems, Weser, Oder. In fact close to Dutch border one is sure to come across wetlands and marshlands and this stretches along the Frisian coast and one also comes across the glacier formed lakes in the northeastern region of Sandy Mecklenburg and the Rhine valley is known to cut across the western portion of this region. In the geography of Germany central uplands are known to continue moving to the east and north as long as the Saale is forged with the Ore Mountains sharing the border with the Czech Republic. The various linear hill and mountain ranges are known to define the landforms of South Germany.

Relatively little Alpine terrain is known to lie in Germany as compared to Switzerland and Austria while the Alps forming the southern border are known to be the largest. The Rhine is separated from the headwaters of the Danube by the Black Forest sharing the southwest borders with France. The climate of Germany is known to be mostly temperate and marine. The winters in this temperate region are cool and cloudy other than being wet and the summers are warm in the south occasionally. Germany’s greater part is known to lie in the cool/temperate climatic zone. The westerly winds which are mostly humid are known to dominate the climate of this place. The climate is mostly known to be oceanic in the northwest and north and this is accompanied by rainfall throughout the year. In the east the winters tend to be very cold and continue for long periods while the summers are known to be warm.

The 3 main rivers in Germany are the Rhine, with its tributaries of the Neckar, the Main and the Moselle, the Elbe, and the Danube. The central Germany is known to be encompassed by the Harz Mountains and Rhine River in the west of Germany is known to be the key waterway promoting the transportation of goods from the northern ports. Germany with its elongated and irregular shape is known to display the sequence of landforms. Germany is geographically divided into 4 topographic divisions like the North German Lowland; the Central German Uplands; Southern Germany; and the Alpine Foreland and the Alps.
