Geography of Greece – an Introduction
Greece is the peninsular country located in the Southern Europe. The country is located on the peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. The Geography of Greece is dominated by the mountains and the water. Though the country does not have too much of water body within the country but the country is completely surrounded by water. A number of islands have been formed, called the Greek Islands. There are so many islands that could be found around the peninsula among which the largest is located at the bottom and called Crete.

The country is bordered by the countries like Albania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia in the north, Ionian Sea in the west, the Mediterranean Sean in the south and the Aegean Sea in the east. It is the only European Union country that does not share a land frontier with any other member of European Union.

As told earlier that the Geography of Greece is mainly dominated by the mountains and water. Greece has a total area of 131,940 square km of area of which about 130,800 square km is of land and the rest of 1,140 square km is water. But the country is completely surrounded by water. It has a coastline of 13,676 km. Geographically, the country Greece, is located in latitude from 35?00'N to 42?00'N and in longitude from 19?00'E to 28?30'E.

While talking about the land, the much of the Geography of Greece is all about rocky and barren land with the occasional plain. In the northern part of the country, there is Pindus Mountains which starts from the north to stretch towards south to the Gulf of Patra. In the southern part of the country, there is Peloponnesus Mountains. As the major part of the land is dominated by the mountains and are rocky in nature, therefore, the land of the country is not conducive of agriculture at all. As a result, in order to make the livelihood, most of the Greeks have to live along the coast, or along the rivers and harhors since the very beginning where the land has been good for farming.
Regions of Greece
The country of Greece is made of a large mainland, the Peloponnenese, a peninsula connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth, and around 3000 islands. The mainland of the country consists of a few regions including Central Greece, Peloponnese, and Thessaly (east/central), Epirus (west), Macedonia (north/northwest), Thrace (northwest) and Euboea. Euboea is the second larges Greek island after Crete.
The Greek Islands
Greece has around 3000 islands scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Most of the islands are located in the Aegean Sea between the mainland and Turkey. The Saronic, the Cyclades, Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos are some of the famous islands. The islands in the Ionian Sea includes the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada etc.
