People in Los Angeles believe that it is not necessary for you to be a Hindu to enjoy the festival of colors. Spring Festival as it is known among many is the

perfect time to get together and enjoy with your friends and loved ones. Holi celebration in Los Angeles 2011 will take place on 19th March and 20th March.
Several special events take place across many places in LA. The sale of tickets for these events begins at least a week or 2 before the program. There is discount for students. The price of the tickets ranges between USD$10 and USD$15. This includes snacks as well as colors.

Holi Celebration in Los Angeles


  • Burning Holika, playing with powdered colors, watercolors, singing chowtaals, visiting friends, inviting them over, preparing recipes, applying colors on one another, and taking part in celebrations that take place in LA are some of the activities people enjoy doing on this occasion.
  • Prior to applying colors on others, it is customary to apply color to deities on the altar followed by the elders of the house. Thereafter, colors can be applied on others. Since the festival lasts for 2 days, the first day is usually meant for dry holi meaning you don’t use water. You play with powder or “abeer”. On the second day water colors are used.
  • Music and dance programs are common. The programs are organized at the venues mentioned above. In addition to the usual drum or “Dhol”, sitar performances are also common.
  • People usually enjoy the whole day, apply color to each other. In the evening, they set off for the various venues where cultural programs and dramas take place. Alternatively, it can as well be a beach party with drinks and dinner.
