Konark Sun Temple
Konark Sun Temple, one of the most popular temples in India, is a 13th century Sun Temple, dedicated to Sun God, located at Konark, a small city in the state of Orissa. Konark Sun Temple is a perfect example of

Known not only for its architectural magnanimousness, Konark Sun Temple is also known for its intricacy and cornucopia of sculptural work. Built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty in the year 1278 CE, Konark Sun Temple is currently considered as one of the top attractions in India and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Konark Sun Temple was conceived as a mammoth chariot of Sun God, with seven pairs of horses pulling the twelve pairs of ornamented wheels of about 10 feet diameter. The entrance is guarded by two lions, crushing the elephants. Built in 1278 CE, the ruins of Konark Sun Temple were excavated in late 19th century. While the tower over the Garbagriha was missing, the Jagmohana was intact.
While entering the Konark Sun Temple, you will find Nata Mandir at the entrance of the temple. The temple dancers used to perform dances as a homage to the Sun god.
The temple showcases harmonious integration of architectural brilliance with plastic allegiance. Various floral and geometric patterns could be observed all around the temple. Konark Sun Temple is also known for its erotic sculptures. One can find some human, and divine figures in sensuous poses, primarily on the second level of the porch structure.
Located at the Konarm, a small city of Orissa, it is quite easy to reach Konark Sun Temple. Konark is well connected with Puri (35 km) and Bhubhaneswar (65 km) by road. If you want to come Konark by train, you have to come either in Puri or in Bhubhaneswar. Those who are coming down here by air, Bhubhaneswar is the nearest airport for them.
Konark Sun Temple remains open on all weekdays from sunrise to sunset. There is no entry fee on Fridays. The best time to visit Konark Sun Temple from November to February.
