Visitors are allowed to touch and mingle with these beautiful and friendly deer. The deer delights the visitors by coming close to them. They are well tamed and habituated to being fed by the visitors. The park authorities have dedicated the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park especially to the kancils or mousedeer – the small, gentle and intelligent creatures.

The kancil or the rainforest mousedeer are mostly seen in the park’s marshy area at the edge of the park close to the stream. These friendly small hoofed animals have a legendary relevance in Malaysian folktales for its wit. According to the

Malaysian legend, the kancil used to fool many other bigger animals like crocodile and tiger, despite of its small size. One of the folktales state that around 1400 AD when exiled Prince Parameswara stopped by the river for resting, he saw a white mousedeer frighten away his hunting dogs. This made the Prince to choose a spot for establishing a settlement where the weak vanquishes the strong and he names the place as Malacca after the tree under which he rested.

Besides the Butterfly Park, Bird Park and the Orchid Garden in the Lake Garden, The Deer Park is another popular attraction that draws tons of tourists every year from all around the world to witness the world’s smallest hoofed animals – the rainforest mousedeer. You can catch glimpses of several local species of deer in the park often resting at the foot of tall trees or shrubs or lapping water from the pond. Kuala Lumpur Deer Park remains open everyday from 9am to 6pm. Admission to the park is free for all.
