Gangal Talao, originally known as Grand Bassin, is a sacred lake situated in a secluded mountain area in Savanne district. Located at the heart of Mauritius, 1800 feet above the sea level, Gangal Talao is the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius and is the home to the biggest annual pilgrimage of Hindus outside of India. In 1972, some water from the Ganges River was mixed with the waters of this lake to make a symbolic link between this lake and the sacred Indian river, and hence the lake was renamed as Gangal Talao.
