Souillac

Souillac, the capital of Savanne district, is a beautiful town located close to the southernmost point of the Mauritius island. Named after Vicomte de Souillac, the governor of the island from 1779 to 1787, Souillac is one of the popular
tourist attractions in Mauritius that attracts a huge number of tourists from all nook and corners of the world. Known for its scenic beauty, the place has a lot to offer to the tourists, that include the soft curves of the northern coastline, and the high cliffs that drop abruptly to the sea. If you want to visit Souillac, you have to come to the souther part of the island of Mauritius. The Savanne river has separated Souillac on the west from the Surinam village, while the Bain des Naigresses river separates it from the village of I'Union. Souillac is popularly has six parts, viz. Quartiers of Terracine, L'eglise, Pitot, Gris-Gris, EDC and L'hopital.

Souillac in Mauritius has a lot to offer to the tourists. The Telfair Garden is one of the popular tourist destinations in Souillac. A beautiful place near the seaside, Telfair Garden is a perfect place for going for a picnic. Named after Charles Telfair, the naturalist and the land proprietor, Telfair Garden is full of big banyan and almond trees. Another top tourist attractions in Souillac is Gris-Gris. The sea cliff at Gris-Gris, where the thick waves from the sea crash at the
rocks directly, is just amazing enough to mesmerize you. “Roche Qui Pleure”, the most spectacular place in Gris-Gris gives you a wonderful view, where constant waves squash against the flanks of the cliff. Souillac also has an ancient port, called Batelage. The embarkment of this port has been renovated to be used as a landing stage for the pirogues of the local fishermen. There is a building next to the port which is currently used as the Village Hall for the Village Council. The National Coast Guard uses another part of the building as their station. There is a restaurant, named “Le Batelage”, located in the third part of the building.

While in Souillac, you should also visit Rochester Falls, a famous waterfalls on the Savanne River. It is known for its strange rectangular form of its rocky flank. You can also visit La Nef museum. It was also the former home of Mauritian poet Robert Edward Hart.
