Geography of New Zealand

We can speak about a lot of things when we are speaking about the geography of New Zealand. The geography of New Zealand consists of two main islands which are known as Te-Ika-a-Maui and Te Wai Pounamu in Maori. Other than this, the geography of New Zealand is also dominated with various other smaller islands as well. The location of New Zealand is such that it has become one of the best destinations for shooting of different television serials. The physical geography of New Zealand is very attractive. The two main islands of New Zealand are located in the South Pacific Ocean.

Some of the other islands of New Zealand includes Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, Bounty Islands, Campbell Islands, Chatham Islands, and Kermadec Islands. New Zealand also has an extensive coastline where you will find excellent marine life as well. This is also known to be one of the seventh largest Exclusive Economic Zones as well.

The South Island of New Zealand is also known to be the largest land mass of the country and most of the population of the country lives here. You will also find that there are 18 peaks. The peaks are more than 3000 meters in height. You will find a lot of wild life as well as flora and fauna here which includes foxes, native bushes Franz Joseph Glaciers as well as a large number of foxes. On the other hand the north Island does not has a large number of mountains but you will find a large number of volcanoes here. The tallest mountain of the island is Mount Ruapehu. This is also known as the active cone volcano as well.

Lake Taupo is one of the popular lakes situated at the middle of the island.

The geology is also one of the important part of the geography of new Zealand. The island lies between two tectonic plates and as a result of this, you will be able to find a large number of Volcanic Zones as well as geysers as well. Earthquakes are also found here and is a natural phenomenon. There are around 14,0000 earthquakes every year. The mountains that are situated here are known to keep on growing. This is one of the region where you can also find hydroelectric power as well. You will also find orographic rainfall here as well. You will also find sedimentary rock formations here as well and some of these include Pancake Rocks and Waitomo Caves.

The climate is also an important part of the geography of New Zealand. The climate of this country can also be described as cool temperate as well as warm temperate. The coldest month in the country is July where as the hottest months are January and February. You will not find a large number of temperature ranges here in New Zealand. The driest city is Christchurch and the wettest city is Auckland. South island gets lot of rainfall whereas the east cost gets the least rainfall in New Zealand.
