Geography of Russia

Geography of Russia very diverse. It is considered to be the largest country in the world. It is situated in North Asia and in Europe. The European part of Russia includes some of the territories to the west of the Ural Mountains. In terms of area, Russia is regarded as the largest country in the world, but is inconveniently situated in relation to some of the major sea lanes of the world. In spite of its size, most parts of the country are wanting in proper climates and soils, which are either too dry or too cold for agriculture.

Geography of Russia also includes some of the highest mountains of Europe, the deepest lake of the world and its longest river. The climate and topography, however, correspond those of the portions of northwest of the North American continent. The northern plains and the forests bounding them to the south discover their nearest counterparts in the Yukon Territory and in the broad swath of land expanding across most of the parts of Canada. The climate, terrain and settlement patterns of Siberia are very much similar to those in Canada and Alaska. Situated in the middle and northern latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, most parts of Russia are much nearer to the North Pole than equator. Comparisons of countries individually are of very less value in gauging the diversity enormous size of Russia which is slightly lesser than about twice the size of the United States. 17.1 million square kilometers of the country include almost one-eighth of the total inhabited land area of the whole world. The European portion of Russia, which covers a healthy part of continental Europe, is inhibited by most of agricultural and industrial activity of Russia.

While going through the geography of Russia you will get to notice a number of mountain areas. The Ural Mountains extends much more than 2,200 kilometers starting from the north to the south, forming the boundary which separates the unequal Asian and European sectors of Russia. The division in terms of continents continues another long 1,375 kilometers from the southern end point of the Ural Mountains by the Caspian Sea and on the Caucasus Mountains. Asian Russia can be considered as large as the combination of India and China, inhabiting almost three-quarters of the total territory of the nation. It is the European western quarter which forms the dwelling place for more than 75 percent of the inhabitants of Russia. This acute mismatched distribution of natural and human resources is one of the prominent features of the geography of Russia and its population. In spite of the attempts by the government to resettle people in the sparsely populated Asian areas of Russia where resources are abundant, this instability persists. In the meantime, reduction of fuel and water resources in the European part exceeds exploitation of Siberia which is rich in resources, the magnificently forbidding area extending from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean.

Russia geography is also rich with various natural resources like oil, minerals, natural gas and timber. There are several manufacturing industries including steel, cars and other heavy manufacturing.
