Benoni, Gauteng
Benoni, Gauteng is a small city located in East Rand. The place is part of greater Johannesburg, which makes it a perfect getaway destination in South Africa.
The foundation of Benoni, Gauteng has a very interesting history linked to it. In 1881, Johan Rissik, the then surveyor general named it "Government Farm Benoni". He found it difficult to assign title deeds to the unclaimed properties of the state, so he just named it in this fashion. The discovery of gold in 1887 in the Chimes mine, which was established by Cornishmen lead to the place being called "Little Cornwall" for some time. In 1904 many dams were set up across the river for the benefit of the evolving mining city. Many trees were planted as well. Finally in 1904 it came to be officially known as Benoni.
The development of Benoni lead to the establishment of race tracks and synagogues. The residents were mostly Jewish. The city was a prime location for training pilots of South African Airforce during World War II. Before this the place was also the headquarters of miners during the Rand Revolt that broke out among miners in 1922. The Apartheid period saw the establishment of many black communities in and around Benoni. Today people of diverse culture live together in harmony. The city became a part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in 2000.
The reservoirs and dams that were built in 1904 continue to stand today and is one of the primary attractions of Benoni, Gauteng. There are lakes surrounding these dams, which is great place for fishing and boating. The trees that were planted back in 1907 stand till today. You can picnic in the midst of nature followed by a boat ride. A walk down the tree shaded paths is good option to spent your evening. The sundown at the dams is yet another beautiful moment that you can enjoy. The bunny park is an interesting place to visit, especially if you are traveling with kids. Tiny rabbits, nibbling at radishes and carrots or running about is very delightful to watch. There are also other small animals that your children will enjoy.
The Willowmoore Park and the local museum are other places of interest in Benoni, Gauteng. You can shop for gifts and other necessities at the Lakeside Shopping Mall. The latter is architecturally very interesting, being shaped as a Mississippi Steamboat. You can also shop in Northmead Square.
