The Voortrekkers established the town of Pietersburg in 1886, naming it after their leader Petrus Jacobus Joubert. The town was declared a city on April 1992. The name of the city was changed to Polokwane on June 11, 2003. The place despite its location on the Tropic of Capricorn, enjoys a relatively temperate climate. The average temperatue is approximately 21 – 22o C. The lowest temperature dip is around 11oC.
