Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng is a city located by the Vaal River. This is mainly an industrial city in Gauteng. The main attraction is the global steel industry, which is the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The foundation of the city was laid because of the establishment of ISCOR (Iron and Stell Corporation), which is now part of a global company – Mittal.

The city has been named after a scientist – Dr H J van der Bijl. He assisted in industrial growth of the nation back in 1920. The establishment of the first plant of Iron and Steel in Pretoria was handled by him. After world war II, the demand of the industry lead to the expansion of the steel plant. To accommodate the employees of ISCOR, a city was developed that was recognized in 1949. Later in 1952 it was declared a municipality.

Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng has primary and secondary educational facilities, for the children of the employees of the steel plant. The other cities along the Vaal river, like Veereeniging, Sasolburg and Meyerton were formed due to the discovery of gold in the region. The fact that the city of Vanderbijlpark was established for reasons other than the discovery of gold is evidence of the growing industrial revolution at Gauteng.
