Switzerland is one of the most peaceful, and one of the most beautiful countries in the whole of Europe. The breathtaking Swiss Alps, the magnificent Matterhorn, and the mirror like lake, like Lake Neuchatel, and Lake Geneva. Switzerland is also famous for the Swiss bank, and Swiss cheese, among a lot of other things.

Unlike a lot other countries, where winter is “off season” for the tourist industry, winters in Switzerland attract a lot of tourists. Christmas in Switzerland is celebrated with a lot of gaiety, and enthusiasm. In case you have plans to travel to Switzerland in winter, Christmas in Switzerland is an experience that you should not miss.

In case you are planning to make a short trip to Switzerland then you may want to have an idea about the passport and visa regulations. It is compulsory that you have a valid passport, and in case you plan to stay, at a stretch, for a period of more than more three months, you need to have a visa too. This is specifically applicable to passport holders of Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and the continent of America with the exceptions of Dominican Republic, Haiti, Belize and Peru.

Switzerland is one of the few European countries where tourists can indulge in duty free shopping. You will be spoiled for choice as far as perfumes, chocolates, and alcoholic beverages like wines are concerned. Attractive discounts are offered, and you are guaranteed to have a gala time shopping for Christmas and New Year gifts for your loved ones.

As in most countries that have a majority Christian population, Christmas Day (December 25), and Boxing Day (December 26), are public holidays in Switzerland. Typically, the White Christmas Tours of Switzerland, cover the period from December twenty first to December twenty eighth.

Christmas in Switzerland means exchange of gifts, mouthwatering chocolates and cakes, beautifully decorated Christmas trees, and the tinkling of bells. Streets, shops and homes are decorated with Christmas lights, streamers, buntings, balloons, Christmas baubles, and bells. Not to forget the figures of beautiful angels that adorn the Christmas trees, and the stars.

The images of Mary, Joseph, and infant Jesus Christ, with the shepherds, the Magi (the three wise men), and the animals of the stable (where Jesus Christ was born), are placed in churches and cathedrals. You will find these figurines in many Christian homes, too. Beautiful candles, many of them scented, are lit. This is an experience that should not be missed. If possible, get your travel operator to take you to one of the Christmas masses (church services), at the cathedrals or churches. This will ensure that you really experience the spirit of Christmas in Switzerland.

As per Swiss tradition, a family member dressed as a an angel comes to distribute the gifts to the family members. Children go from house to house exchanging relatives. Bells form an important part in the Christmas celebrations. In fact, in Switzerland, bell ringing is an important tradition, and after mid night mass a number of bell ringing contests are held in the rural areas. The contests end with a lot of chocolate treats being passed around!
