The size of he county is not well known because of the consistent disputes related to the land claims of several islands in the Persian Gulf. The larges emirate is Abu Dhabi, which accounts for about 87 percent of the UAE's total area. The smallest emirate is Ajman, which covers only 259 square kilometers.

The United Arab Emirates extends for more than 650 kilometers in the Persian Gulf along the southern shore. Most of the coast land comprises of salt pans extending far in the inland regions. Dubai is one of the largest natural harbor in UAE. There are several islands found in the gulf, and the possession of some of the islands is subject to international disputes particularly with both Iran and Qatar. It is also important to mention that smaller islands along with the many coral reefs and shifting sandbars provide major obstruction to navigation. Further complication is added with Strong tides and occasional windstorms that affect the shipping activity near the shore.

Geographic extensions of UAE:
The UAE also extends along the Gulf of Oman for about 90 kilometers. This is an area called the Al Batinah coast. The Al Hajar al Gharbi (Western Al Hajar) Mountains that rises upto 2,500 meters, separates the Al Batinah coast from the rest of the UAE. The Al Hajar al Gharbi Mountains, that begins at the UAE-Oman border on the Persian Gulf coast of the Ras Musandam (Musandam Peninsula), extends southeastward to the southernmost UAE-Oman frontier on the Gulf of Oman for a length of about 150 kilometers. This range continues as the Al Hajar ash Sharqi (Eastern Al Hajar) Mountains. In the southern and the western parts of Abu Dhabi, you will expect to find the rolling sand dunes merge into the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter) of Saudi Arabia. The Abu Dhabi, desert area has two important oases with enough underground water for the convenience of cultivation and settlements.
