In Brazilian parlance, the festival is known as ‘the Dia dos Namorados’. ‘The Dia dos Namorados’means the ‘Day of the enamored’or boyfriends’/girlfriends’day. The Valentine Day in the country is celebrated on the eve of the Day of St. Anthony. St Anthony is also known as the Marriage Saint. The common belief in Brazil is that the St. Anthony will bring good fortune on marriages. It is also very common in Brazil to throw a big party on this day. All the members of the family as well as the friends are invited on this occasion.
The unmarried girls perform a ritual called Simpatias on the Dia dos Namorados in search for a good husband or boyfriend. Messages are exchanged among the couples on a large scale. Another traditional mode of celebration is to exchange greetings cards.
